Or should I say font crush? I really had difficulty of differentiating both. It’s both the same for me but when in doubt, I always ask Mr. Google!
Typeface vs. Font
Wikipedia – In typography, a typeface (also known as font family) is a set of one or more fonts each composed of glyphs that share common design features
Webopedia – The typeface represents one aspect of a font. The font also includes such characteristics as size, weight, italics, and so on. …
Graphic Design (forum) – Originally, the typeface is a particular design of type, while a font is a type in a particular size and weight. In short, a typeface usually gathers many fonts.
The last one, simplify everything – typeface as the whole (word) and font is the individual (letter). Am I right?
Anyways, if you are following me I’ve been collecting fonts, especially brush lettering, handwritten and calligraphy style. Those are not only useful in creating digital designs that requires me cursive fonts but also I use them to practice lettering. When you haven’t find your own style, you seek for it by copying others, combining their styles and eventually create your own. Now that’s what you called “steal like an artist“.
Well, for today’s typeface crush it is called “The Scallion” from Creative Market.
This font was designed by handwriting, and it has a modern and unique forms of calligraphy, the writing style is very natural. Scallion has a very unique style of calligraphy, it is very suitable for use in the work of modern design.
Although this is readily available for your logo designs, wedding invitations, t-shirt print and the like, this typeface is good to practice for brush lettering too. Why bother practice when it’s available? If you are a novice letterer remember our goal here is to create our own style. So go ahead install the font and print. Use tracing paper to copy and practice the fonts. Or create words and trace it then repeatedly write it. Do this with other calligraphy fonts and surely you can create a lettering style that you can proudly say your own.
I will be doing a lettering challenge for the whole month of November. I will write “Word of the Day” from the app dictionary.com. And for this challenge I will use “The Scallion” typeface for my lettering style. Check my Instagram @eytozee_ #letterthewordoftheday.
