(Funny story—I was convinced I had posted a whole collection by now, but nope… just three! I guess I’ve been a little slow on the blogging front. 😅 But I promise, I’m working on being more consistent so I can finally share all the fun projects we’ve been making.)
That’s why today I’m so excited to show you how to create one of my favorite Candyland ornaments yet—DIY fake cotton candy.

Instead of the traditional red-and-green décor, our tree featured pastel hues, oversized sweets, and glittery accents. And of course, we designed it especially for my niece, who loved every magical detail.

- Hi‑Lite Blanket Couverture (fluffy batting material)
- Watercolor
- Stylish paper straws (Dollar Store works great)
- Glue gun & glue sticks
- Glitter (for extra sparkle)
- Scissors
- Small basin (if soaking in diluted paint)
💡 Tip: You can use any water-based paint, but I recommend testing a few to see which gives you the fluffiest, most even results.
Step 1: Coloring the Hi‑Lite Blanket Couverture
I tried several coloring mediums:
- Ecoline Watercolor – vibrant and spreads well
- Winsor & Newton Watercolor – good pigmentation
- Crayola Watercolor – affordable and works surprisingly well
- Purple Alcohol Ink – too sticky, so I skipped it
At first, I tried applying the watercolor directly and squeezing the couverture to spread the color. But this method only caused the couverture to lose its shape, making it harder to form into cotton candy.rm into a cotton candy.
Instead of applying paint directly, I recommend diluting the watercolor in a basin of water. Dip the blanket couverture into the mixture to get a soft, even color. this method requires longer drying time.
👩🎨 Pro Tip: If you prefer a pastel look, add more water. For bold colors, keep the paint more concentrated.
Step 2: Let the Pieces Dry
After coloring, lay the pieces flat or hang them up to dry completely. This ensures the material stays fluffy and holds its shape.
Step 3: Form the Cotton Candy
Now the fun part—shaping the cotton candy!
- Tear or separate the dried blanket into smaller, manageable pieces.
- Loosely wrap the pieces around a decorative paper straw.
- Use a glue gun to secure the layers together, forming a fluffy cone shape.
- For best results, gently flatten the pieces before wrapping them so they stick better.
Step 4: Add Glitter for Sparkle
Sprinkle fine glitter over your cotton candy to give it that magical, sugary sparkle. You can go subtle or all out, depending on your tree’s style.
Step 5: Display on Your Candyland Tree
Together, they’ll create a tree that looks straight out of a holiday fairytale!
