Christmas is my favourite time of the year. As a passionate crafter, I love using this season as an opportunity to DIY our decorations.
For the past two years, we’ve decorated with a Candyland theme, crafting nearly all the ornaments ourselves. This year, though, we’re thinking of a more neutral look, incorporating handmade string stars and balls to fit a farmhouse Christmas style. While we change our theme every couple of years, we’re always mindful not to overspend, reusing old DIY ornaments to create a unique mix-and-match aesthetic.
With this neutral theme, I’m excited about the versatility—it’s a timeless look that will last for years. One of the DIY ornaments we’re making is a yarn Christmas tree. These are simple to make, and we already have most of the materials on hand!
Materials Needed:
- Foam cones (or make cones using cardstock) in various sizes
- Yarn (variety of colors and thickness)
- Hot glue and glue gun
- Beads (optional)
- Wooden dowel (optional)
- Wood slices (optional)
Steps to Create a Yarn Christmas Tree:
Step 1: Make a Cone
If you’re using cardstock, make a cone template to help you shape it. Choose cones of different heights to add dimension. Foam cones work great, but cardstock cones are a cheaper alternative.
Step 2: Wrap the Cone
Select yarn in different colors, opting for thicker yarns for a fluffier look. Wrap the yarn around the cone, securing it with hot glue as you go. Get creative here—use different colors, patterns, or textures!
Step 3: Add a Wooden Dowel and Wood Slice Base (Optional)
For added height, insert a wooden dowel at the bottom of the cone and secure it into a wood slice. This optional step gives your tree a rustic base and extra stability.
Step 4: Adorn the Yarn Christmas Tree
Add beads or small stars to decorate the tree, making it more festive. I’ve used pearl beads here for a classic touch.
And there you have it—easy and charming yarn Christmas trees! These look lovely as table decor, especially when paired with Christmas garlands.
